Action is well underway at the APT Finale Macau Championships 2017 that is being hosted at the Macau Billionaire Poker Room in Babylon Casino. Day 2 of the HK$11,000 Main Event is done and dusted and we have two Indian contenders – Varun Gupta and Adda52 Team Pro Kunal Patni who are both still in the running for the title.

The event attracted 157 runners across two starting flights (61 players on Day 1A and 96 entries on Day 1B) generating a HK$1,507,200 prize pool with the top 18 places assured to make it in the money. There are presently 24 players in contention for the title at the start of Day 3.

Team India was well represented with Kalyan Chakravarthy (Day 1B chip leader), Kunal PatniZarvan Tumboli, Nishant Sharma Ronak Vyas, Sumit Sapra and Varun Gupta, all making it to Day 2 but only Gupta (201,000) and Patni (71,000) survived the day`s play yesterday.

Meanwhile, Sangjun Lee won the No Limit Hold’em 1 Day event for HK$34,900 and China’s Wei Guoliang shipped the No Limit Hold’em 1 Day 2 event for HK$97,000

Main Event Day 2

Day 2 began with 88 survivors returning to the Macau Billionaire Poker room but at the end of a brutal day for most, only 24 hopefuls bagged their stacks.

By the end of the scheduled eight rounds of the day, Malaysia’s Michael Soyza bagged the strongest stack of 355,000 and was followed very closely by Chinese Taipei’s Jack En-Ching Wu who had just 1,000 less chips than Soyza.

Other notables still in the fray include India’s Varun Gupta and Kunal Patni along with Kai Paulsen, Kosei Ichinose and past APT Main Event champion, Andre Moracchini.

Stealing the spotlight were the two chip leaders from the starting flights i.e. Day 1A leader Wei Guoliang and Day 1B leader Kalyan Chakravarthy from Indiahowever the latter failed to make it through with Soyza taking him out.

Chakravarthy fell in one of the more bizarre hands of the day. Soyza three-bet preflop and Chakravarthy called. On the Kx Qx 5x flop, Soyza bet and Chakravarthy called. On the turn 7xSoyza shoved with Jx 10x for an open-ended straight draw and Chakravarthy made a good call with Qx 6x. However the 9x river completed the board and Soyza’s straight, railing Chakravarthy in the process.

NLH 1 Day event

One of APT’s most popular side events i.e. No Limit Hold’em 1 Day was running alongside the Main Event and registered 65 entries. After 11-hours of grueling battle it was Korea’s Sangjun Lee who emerged victorious to capture the HKD 34,900 first place purse and his first-ever APT title.

Final Day Recap

With seven players remaining and two players already paid, Lee claimed his first two victims, Shon Yoshi Yamashita (seventh place) and Hiroki Morishita in sixth place.

Yuji Mikubo then went out at fifth place followed by Yinfei Xiao in fourth place.

Kinichi Nakataka joined the railbirds in third and Lee started the heads-up round against Masato Shimizu with a huge a 6:1 chip advantage.

Despite Lee’s monstrous lead, he had difficulty putting the lid on Shimizu who went on to take the lead on several occasions but Lee bounced right back time and again.

The final hand of the event saw Lee’s card 3card 3 against Shimizu’s card 3card 1. Lee sealed it right on the flop as card 3card 3card 3 peeled out to complete an unbeatable flush for Lee.

The No Limit Hold’em 1 Day 2 drew a total of 50 entries that collected HK$97,000 in the prize pool with the top five places making it in the money. Outlasting them all was China’s Wei Guoliang who has been on a trailblazing run at the series. Guoliang had earlier topped Day 1A of Main Event but unfortunately couldn’t make it through to Day 3.

Prior to his win, Guoliang’s deepest run at an APT event was a fourth-place finish at one of the side events. This time though, he defeated Hong Kong’s Lai Heng Tse in the heads-up battle to pocket the HK$38,800 first place purse.

Prior to facing Heng Tse for the title, Guoliang eliminated Yan Wang in third place. Guoling’s card 1card 3 dominated Wang’s card 2card 1 as the board spread out card 1card 3card 3card 3card 3.

Guoliang started the heads-up duel against Lai with a 2.5:1 chip disadvantage but soon the tables turned and the former took the lead. The final hand of the event saw Guoliang’s card 3card 1 besting Heng Tse’s card 3card 2 on the board card 1card 3card 2card 2card 1.
