Dan Smith (cover image) pocketed $1.404 million in prize money by claiming the $100,000 Super High Roller title at WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Las Vegas. It’s the third-biggest career cash for Smith, who now has over $19 million in winnings, and an impressive third title in a High Roller event with a $100K buy-in.

In an intriguing battle, Smith dominated Daniel ‘Kid Poker’ Negreanu in heads-up play to claim the title. Seasoned pro Negreanu had to be content with runner-up finish that fetched him $936,000. The humbling experience forced Negreanu to realize that he needed to rededicate himself to learning his craft as the top players were “just too good”.

The event attracted 39 entries to the Bellagio Poker Room generating a $3.9 million prize pool with the top six places making it in the money.

The exit of Stephen Chidwick in seventh place saw the final six players locking up a six-figure payday. Falling first was Bryn Kenney for $234,000, and then the final five players bagged up their chips to return to play on the final day.

Final Day Recap

The day began with Isaac Haxton starting with the strongest stack with 1.81 million in chips. Negreanu was second with 1.472 million. In addition to Smith, Stefan Schillhabel and Sergio Aido were the other notable players in contention for the title.

Sergio Aido fell first followed by Haxton who failed to take advantage of his chip lead and exited the event in fourth place.

Following Negreanu on Twitter, it was learnt that Smith and Stefan Schillhabel clashed often during three-handed play. Eventually, Smith got the better of Schillhabel when his aces held up against Schillhabel’s jack-ten.

Schillhabel fell in third place to leave Smith heads up for the title against Negreanu.

Smith entered the heads up match in the lead and it didn’t last long, but played out a dramatic final hand, as tweeted by Negreanu.

Negreanu climbed up to over $35.2 million in career live tournament cashes after this score while Smith moved over $19 million in live tournament earnings, rising from 17th place on the all-time money list to 14th.
