The Congress party in Goa demanded a security review of the five offshore and nine onshore casinos operated in the coastal state in the wake of Sunday (October 1) night’s massacre at a Las Vegas concert in which at least 58 people were killed and over 500 were injured leaving the entire world in a state of shock.

The incident is touted to be one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern history as a lone gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Craig Paddock unleashed a hail of bullets on a huge outdoor concert festival through a window from 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel leaving over 58 people dead and more than 500 wounded.

Goa Congress President Shantaram Naik told reporters at a press conference in Panaji on Wednesday, October 4 that, “The government must quickly take measures and review the security of casinos in Goa. We, as a party, do not support casinos but the hundreds of thousands of people who go to those must be protected,”

He further added, “The casino owners may not be interested in providing them security but it is the duty of the state to ensure that the safety of the patrons is not compromised.”

However, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has already ruled out the security review of the numerous casinos saying guns are easily available in Las Vegas, as compared to Goa. He asserted that the beach state was safe from such incidents and pointed out that the US massacre took place as guns and ammunition were “easily available” in the world’s casino capital (Las Vegas).

Recently, the BJP led Goa government had extended the deadline by six months for relocating offshore casino vessels from the River Mandovi.
