In a breaking news report, Nagaland legislative assembly has just passed its online bill – the “Nagaland Prohibition of Gambling and Promotion and Regulation of Online Games of Skill Bill, 2015.”

The bill was approved yesterday by the select committee with hardly any changes, after they found all its clauses satisfactory. According to Glaws.in, the state’s Morung Express reported, “The recommendation of the Committee stated that it has thoroughly examined the Bill and deliberated on its social and legal implications and it is satisfied with the legalities and the revenue that would be generated.”

The long held-up bill was first introduced in July 2015 by Chief Minister TR Zeliang (cover image) and is expected to make an impact not only on the legal status of gaming in the state, but also create a legal precedent for the entry of these games into other states as well. The landmark bill includes listed games such as poker, rummy and fantasy sports and clearly states that these are not tantamount to gambling, irrespective of stakes or profit elements involved. The bill makes way for an online licensing regime, leading for a healthier and legal environment for both players and operators.

It will still be a few months before the bill will be operational though, as it needs to be ratified first by the Governor. Thereafter, the state government will frame the rules and licensing policies for its implementation.
