Noted poker pro and 10-time WSOP Bracelet winner Phil Ivey was ordered by a US federal judge last week to shell out over $10.1 Million to Atlantic City based Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, as part of a judgment following a lengthy lawsuit that claimed he used an illegal technique called ‘edge sorting’ to win this amount.

The hefty purse not only includes the $9.6 Million that Ivey and his partner Cheng Yin Sun amassed over four sessions but also their winnings from playing craps and comp repayments amounting to $250,000 that were extended to the accused.

Ivey`s case closely mirrors that of the 2105 Golden Nugget gamblers who had to relinquish $1.5 Million for similar reasons. Incidentally Ivey was also involved in another edge-sorting case against Genting Casino (UK), with the latter withholding £7.8 Million of his winnings from Punto Banco at Crockfords Casino.

Contesting the ruling, Ed Jacobs, Ivey’s attorney said, “What this ruling says is a player is prohibited from combining his skill and intellect and visual acuity to beat the casino at its own game,” further adding that, “The casino agreed to every single accommodation requested by Phil Ivey in his four visits because they were eager to try to win his money.”

Borgata officials though are unhappy with the compensation as they were gunning for $15.5 Million in total damages that includes the $5.4 Million the Casino assumes it would win if Ivey would have played without using his ‘edge sorting’ advantage.

However the Casino`s demand for a reassessment on the damages didn`t hold much ground with Noel Hillman, as the U.S. District Court Judge maintained that the claim was speculative in nature.

It is learnt that Ivey’s legal team is looking to file an appeal against the decision.
