In this edition of PokerGuru 3-Bet, we talk about Partypoker’s announcing the all new Latin American Poker Championships (LAPC) and also inducting Finnish young gun Joni Jouhkimainen in their ambassadorial team. In the third and final story, we discuss PokerStars’ new announcement of introducing a new seating process called ‘Seat Me’ which is expected to make the seating process at its online tables “better, quicker and fairer.” The feature will first be introduced in Spain and if it goes as expected, the same will be rolled out globally.

partypoker Live Announces Latin American Poker Championships

In another major step towards its resurgence on the global poker scene, 2017 operator of the year award winner partypoker unveiled the new LIVE Latin American Poker Championships (LAPC). This new series will debut in late February in Punte del Este, Uruguay, a casino and jetsetter playground long considered one of the touristy jewels of South America.

The nine-day series running between February 24 and March 4, guarantees $2 million in prize pool, headlined by the $1 million guaranteed Main Event along with a $200,000 guaranteed Super High Roller event.

Notably, all events on the line-up are no-limit hold’em ones as other formats such as Omaha are not popular in South America as they are in Europe or US.

The announcement of the new Latin American tour comes after a stellar year for both partypoker online and live brands, a feat that earned the brand the “Online Poker Operator of the Year” award at the EGR Operator Awards 2017.

However, this won’t be their first partypoker event in South America. In the past, partypoker has partnered with World Series of Poker (WSOP) to host WSOP Brazil and had even sponsored the WSOP Uruguay Main Event.

partypoker LIVE president John Duthie sounded excited about the new venture and said, “Poker has taken off in Latin America in a major way in recent years so it’s a very exciting time to be playing there. I’m delighted that we are hosting another event in the region, especially somewhere like Punta del Este which is such a fabulous destination. I know players are going to love it.”

partypoker pros who are confirmed to be in attendance at the series include Brazilian Joao Simao and Argentinean Richard Dubini.

Finnish Young Gun Joni Jouhkimainen Joins partypoker Ambassador Team

In a major arms race of sort, online giant partypoker has roped in Finnish poker star Joni Jouhkimainen ahead of both 888poker and Winamax who too are aiming to sign up the brightest young guns in the game.

The 26-year-old Jouhkimainen’s presence is expected to help bolster the company as well as the team’s presence in the Nordics region.

The man behind it all is none other than partypoker’s head of Nordics, Thomas Udness. The former PokerStars employee joined partypoker last year in April with a remit to grow poker in the Nordic region and immediately set about his task by signing his former teammate at Stars, Johnny Lodden.

Udness on the new development said, “Joni has had a great career to date with some fantastic results on the live poker circuit. He is one of the very best players in Finland so it’s an honour that he is joining partypoker and we are thrilled to have him on board.”

Jouhkimainen said his decision to join partypoker was an easy one citing the opinion that they put player’s first. He stated, “I’m really happy to be joining team Partypoker. All the efforts that Partypoker has been making recently to put players first have made me, and many others, really happy.”

From 18-years of age till date, Jouhkimainen has earned $2.5 Million playing live poker tournaments. His first big score came when he was just 18-and-a-half when he finished sixth in the Italian Poker Tour Season 1 Sanremo for $31,783. In September 2013, he finished fourth in the EPT10 Barcelona High Roller for $197,977, but his biggest score to date came at the same stop the year before. In a field of 1,082 players, Jouhkimainen placed third in the EPT9 Barcelona Main Event and pocketed $496,436.

More recently, in December, he took fourth at the Partypoker LIVE Nordic Poker Championships in Prague for €70,000. About the score he said, “It was nice to start off my relationship with partypoker with a great result at the Nordic Poker Championships in Prague, especially as Prague is one of my favourite poker stops every year,”

Jouhkimainen thus becomes the 19th member of the partypoker ambassadorial team as the company continues to install respected poker-loving professionals in almost every critical area around the globe.

PokerStars to Introduce “Seat Me” Feature to Prevent Bumhunting

In a major change in operation (only Spain for now), online giant PokerStars’ coming shared European liquidity network will not allow players to select tables.

In a lengthy post on the official PokerStars blog, PokerStars’ Director of Innovation and Poker Operations, Severin Rasset revealed that the site will be introducing “Seat Me,” a new seating process which Stars promises will make the seating process at its online tables “better, quicker and fairer.”

Rasset said, “Today, we have achieved most of our initial goals with Seat Me; greatly reducing players’ ability to hunt specific opponents, completely preventing the use of seating scripts, and creating an environment where recreational players play more hands.”

Traditionally in online poker games, players could browse through a selection of available tables and choose the seats they liked best.

PokerStars promises that the new Seat Me will greatly reduce, if not eliminate altogether, the notorious online practice of “bumhunting,” in which online regulars fiercely compete to hunt down newer, less-skilled players.

The goal, is to ensure as much as possible, to balance the playing field, and reduce the enormous edge that online pros have over recreational and/or less skilled players.

PokerStars plans to roll out the “new functionality” soon on its Spain-only site,, and then roll it out to the global audience soon after if the single-market test is executed as expected.

The announcement was met with widespread praise across much of the online-poker world, but was quickly ridiculed by the segment of high-volume grinders who rely on seating scripts and bumhunting. Numerous posters on various discussion forums essentially vowed to find workarounds to the Seat Me plan.

The new Seat Me introduction fits into PokerStars’ ongoing plans to “destroy” the underground but fairly widespread practice of bumhunting.
