The 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona €5,300 Main Event registered a total 1,682 entries to take the prize pool to a massive €8,157,700. The event paid out the top 247 places and taking home the lion`s share of the prize pool was Sweden`s Sebastian Sorensson (cover image).

Sorensson who till recently was a micro stakes grinder got into the event through a $200 online satellite on PokerStars. It was avid that he wasn’t used to such long hours of poker and often folded his hands without even looking at them in the main event but still managed to take it down.

Sorensson, banked a life-changing €987,043 in prize money after a three-way chop with his heads-up opponent Lachezar Petkov and PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo winner Raffaele Sorrentino who eventually finished third.

Sorensson who is also known to have a gambling streak has been on a winning streak off late. He had backed Nate Diaz who was a sizable underdog in a 2015 bout against Michael Johnson. Diaz won, and Sorensson banked $1,000. He then put his winnings of $1,000 on Donald Trump to win the Republican presidential nomination, at about 3-1 odds and won that too. He then decided to start playing poker and hopped into the micro stakes pool with the occasional shot such as this and has now hit the jackpot!

A number of well-known names made it in the money including Alex Difelice (10th – €87,100), Rens Feenstra (13th – €77,800), Nick Petrangelo (19th – €53,200), Igor Dubinskyy (25th – €37,300), Jackson White (27th – €37,300), Kevin Stani (48th – €22,680), Matas Cimbolas (58th for €18,190), Kyle Bowker (61st – €18,190), Dmitry Vitkind (80th – €15,490), Mihails Morozovs (81st – €15,490), Tobias Peters (148th – €10,270), Dario Sammartino (211th – €9,400) and Sam Greenwood (223rd – €9,400).

After five tournament days of grueling poker action, the six-handed final table got set which represented six different nationalities.

Final Table Recap

Short stack Usman Siddique fell early and then started the long five-handed war which went on for about five hours.

PokerStars Team Pro Andre Akkari had one of the strongest stacks of the final table with about 40% of the chips at one point but he fell in fifth place.

In the very next hand, Uruguay’s Brian Kaufman dropped in fourth place and after about an hour of three-handed play, the remaining players agreed to a deal with Sorrentino asserting that he needed more than ICM. Ultimately, he got what he wanted from Sorensson.

Just a few hands later, Sorrentino’s dream of becoming a two-time PokerStars Championship was shattered as he hit the rail in third place to set up the heads-up duel.

That left Sorensson started with a sizable lead of more than 4-1 against Petkov with around 50 big blinds in play. Petkov found an early double and did his best to keep the pots as small as possible but Sorensson did the complete opposite.

The breaking point was soon reached and the final hand of the event saw Petkov shoving with king-nine and Sorensson snap-called with ace-king and flopped an ace to seal the title. The proud winner went on to say, “I will probably buy a whole bunch of nice shit,” after his win.
