We are very well aware that Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino is bustling with WSOP action, but equally hot action was spilling out at another place at Las Vegas, the M Resort. Last week, the resort played host to season 2 of the Hollywood Poker Open and the Championship Event of the series, a $2,500 buy-in tournament featuring a $500,000 guaranteed prize pool.

The event attracted a record-setting field of 692 entries, creating a massive prizepool of $1,560,460. Spread over three days, the championship event saw a final victor on June 29th and it was England’s Simon Deadman (cover image), who bested the field for a whopping $351,097 first place prize, along with the bragging rights to the second HPO Championship title. Last year, Ana Marquez outlasted a field of 631, to collect the top prize of $320,189 at the inaugural HPO Championship Event.

The victory will be recorded as Deadman’s best live cash till date, as he added this score to his over $1 million in live earnings. Notables who were in attendance included HPO ambassador Chris Moneymaker, Lauren Kling, Jacob Bazeley, Amit Makhija, Jared Jaffee, Aaron Massey, Guillaume Darcourt and 2013 November Niner Michiel Brummelhuis. Unfortunately, none of them could cash in the tournament that paid the top 63 finishers.

Final Table Recap

The third and final day began with 23 players returning to the felt and soon it was narrowed down to a final table of nine. Mike Sowers made an early exit from the final table, when Elliott Zaydman rivered a flush against Sowers kings.

Thereafter, HPO Regional Championship winner Bradley Yazici bowed out of the tournament in 7th place, followed Robbie Bakker in 6th place.

After Zaydman and Martin Godsk were eliminated in 5th and 4th places respectively, Kitty Kuo was leading the charge as the three-handed action began. However, Deadman quickly turned things around when Kuo’s trip kings fell to his full house and she went from being the chip leader to the short stack. The very next hand saw Kuo hitting the rails, once again courtesy Deadman.

Deadman was up against Michael Wang for the heads-up match, but Deadman’s big chip lead over Wang, soon ended the tournament. On the final hand, Deadman’s prevailed over Wang’s pocket fives, giving him the honor of the title and his first victory of 2014. The win came in after his six previous runner-up finishes this year. “It was painful not getting the trophy,” said a joyous Deadman. “I always joke around about finishing second, but I wanted to win this real bad.”
